When the US was drafting soldiers for WWI, dental disease was declared a national security risk because these soldiers were not fit to fight in wars overseas with such dangerous infections and high pain levels. Since then, tooth brushing was introduced and dental professionals started working to find solutions to the root problems of dental disease. In their research, ways to report decayed teeth were found and even the field of dental hygiene was introduced. Dental hygienists have since played a pivotal role in removing bacteria that cause oral disease before it even starts.
We’ve made incredible progress–dental infections are no longer in the top 10 causes of deaths! By educating our patients to take control of their dental health, we have seen entire generations change the trajectory of the next. We take pride on being prevention experts. Preventative medicine is the frontline and reparative medicine is the final defense. As you consider boosting your immunity, know that your periodontal health affects your systemic health and we can help you fight infections before they start. Activate your pursuit of total wellness today!
oral INFLAMMATION IS a SNAP SHOT to systemic health
The signs of inflammation are redness, heat, swelling, and pain. As dental clinicians, we check the tissues for signs of inflammation. This is important because inflammation in the tissues of the mouth is a snap shot of what is going on at the cellular level throughout the body. We are able to gather information by assenting the tissues that support the teeth and see what is going on in your cardiovascular, immune, and digestive systems. Additionally, while inflammation in the gums doesn’t hurt on its own, when there is pain during a basic cleaning, it is a sign of inflammation that requires more investigation. Bleeding gums is another sign of inflammation that indicates ulceration and whether or not an infection has progressed.
